100 Years of Groundbreaking Research: Highlighting Mpox Discovery

19/09/2024

As we celebrate the Journal Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology’s 100-year anniversary, we’re proud to highlight key contributions that have shaped medical research over the past century.

Our archives provide a window into the evolution of scientific discovery, with articles dating back to our very first edition in 1924.

A scientific milestone

One such milestone is a 1959 article by Preben von Magnus and his team, whose research led to the first discovery of the mpox virus in monkeys in 1958. This was a pivotal moment in virology, as it opened the door to further understanding zoonotic diseases — viruses that can transfer from animals to humans.

Their work, which took place at the Statens Serum Institut in Copenhagen, Denmark, established a foundation for future research into poxviruses and public health responses to viral outbreaks. The importance of this discovery remains relevant today as we continue to study mpox and other similar diseases.
